Karnataka legislature: Bill on public spaces does not make it

The Karnataka Regulation of Use of Government Premises and Public Property Bill, 2026, which aimed to regulate activities of private organizations and individuals in public spaces, failed to pass during the Monsoon Session of the Karnataka legislature. The Cabinet had previously approved the bill, but its fate changed when a Government Order on the matter was struck down by the Karnataka High Court.

After the Cabinet's decision, the draft Bill was sent to the Law Department for revisions, with several suggestions emerging during the Cabinet discussions. The revised draft was expected to be completed by Tuesday; however, the session was adjourned sine die on Monday evening. Despite being defended by several ministers and Chief Minister D.K.

Shivakumar, the Bill was viewed negatively politically, as it was perceived as an effort to limit the activities of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) on government premises.
