The prominence of Korean cosmetics in Colombia's market is experiencing a rapid transformation. This trend commenced in earnest in 2023, leading to a record-breaking $7.8 million in exports of Korean beauty products to the country last year, marking a remarkable 48% increase from the prior year. This surge solidifies Korea's growing influence in Colombia, the fourth-largest economy in Latin America.

To bolster local distribution channels for Korean beauty brands, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) organized the "The K-Beauty Secret in Colombia 2026" event in Medellin on August 21 in collaboration with the local K-beauty distributor "Chokchok Skin." The event aimed to leverage the current positive economic atmosphere following recent summit meetings in Latin America.

Participating in the event were 17 small and medium-sized enterprises and mid-sized companies, including APR, Musinsa, and COSMAX, representing Korea's beauty industry. Additionally, approximately 30 beauty influencers and major local distribution networks like "Grupo Exito" and "Olimpica" attended, displaying strong interest in Korean products.

Despite being at an early stage compared to Mexico or Brazil, Colombia is recognized as a market with immense growth potential due to the surge in demand for new brands. The country benefits from a duty-free advantage stemming from the Free Trade Agreement with Korea. Moreover, Colombia boasts a robust air logistics network, one of the strongest in Latin America, which is expected to facilitate the swift transport of high-value-added products such as beauty devices, further bolstering market expansion into neighboring nations.

Beyond mere promotion, KOTRA has established a cooperation framework among public institutions to translate the event's outcomes into tangible export results. This includes providing certification assistance from the National Food and Drug Surveillance Institute for participating companies and promoting a financing program worth about $100 million in cooperation with the Export-Import Bank of Korea.

Following the event, KOTRA plans to maintain export outcomes through ongoing online consultation meetings between Korean companies and local distribution networks, based on buyer feedback.

Sung Ki-joo, head of KOTRA's Bogota Trade Center, concluded that Colombia offers significant potential as a hub for the expansion of Korean consumer goods throughout Latin America.
