‘Jesus was accused; He kept quiet and watched them’ – Afenyo-Markin backs down on suit against Sammy Gyamfi

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has vehemently denied accusations questioning his motives for calling for accountability regarding losses linked to the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP). The Minority Leader dismissed the allegations as "false and defamatory" in a social media post on Saturday, emphasizing that his intent was to uphold Parliament's constitutional duty to examine public institutions and demand explanations when questions arise about the use and management of public resources.

Afenyo-Markin stated that his probe into the reported US$1.7 billion loss in 2025 under the DGPP and the role of GoldBod in the transactions were not motivated by personal interests or any improper agenda. Instead, he affirmed that his actions were solely driven by his responsibility to oversee Parliament's functioning. The controversy stems from disagreements over the reported loss and the extent of GoldBod's involvement in the transactions.

The IMF has expressed concern over losses associated with the BoG's domestic gold purchasing operations, prompting renewed scrutiny of the programme. GoldBod, instrumental in Ghana's gold purchasing and aggregation schemes, has drawn questions regarding its role in the transactions and the proportion of losses to assign to it. The Minority Leader acknowledged that public officials subjected to oversight may encounter resistance, but he stressed that such responses should not detract from Parliament's role in investigating legitimate concerns.
