IGP urges Malaysians to reduce travel to southern Thailand amid tense security

MELAKA, Aug 24 — In response to a surge in violent incidents across southern Thailand, the Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail, has urged Malaysians to reduce travel to the region. Over the past weekend, more than 50 bombings and arson attacks were reported in three southern Thai provinces, prompting heightened security measures along the Malaysia-Thailand border.

"We are increasing border controls because we are concerned... first and foremost about Malaysians who frequently visit the area," Mohd Khalid stated, emphasizing that the current tense security situation warrants Malaysians to avoid visiting the conflict zone. The police chief received the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka (D.G.S.M.) award at a ceremony in Melaka, expressing hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict to ensure continued safety along the border.

Additionally, a curfew was imposed in Narathiwat province from 10.15pm on Aug 22 until 5am the following day due to the escalating violence.
