IBM unveils dual-architecture mainframe processor with Arm

IBM has unveiled a new dual-architecture mainframe processor capable of running both IBM and Arm operating systems, according to a press release from Hot Chips conference. The processor, built on a 2 nanometer technology node, will be integrated into future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems. It features 11 high-performance cores operating above 5.7 GHz, AI inference accelerators for detecting fraud in real-time, an on-chip data processing unit for accelerated I/O, and a large cache architecture.

Each core is designed to execute both Arm and IBM Z or Arm and LinuxONE instructions simultaneously. The processor aims to combine the strengths of IBM's robust systems with the rapidly growing Arm software ecosystem, which supports over 22 million developers globally. IBM emphasizes that this announcement represents future goals and objectives, which may be subject to change.
