“I cannot spit on my country” – Andre Ayew breaks silence on 2026 World Cup snub

Former Ghana captain André Ayew revealed on former Chelsea and Nigeria midfielder John Obi Mikel's Obi One Podcast that he intentionally refrained from criticizing his exclusion from the Black Stars squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing his desire not to "spit on my country". The 36-year-old spoke openly about his decision on the podcast, reflecting on his recent exclusion and the subsequent controversy that ensued.

Ayew, who led the Black Stars in the 2021 and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2022 World Cup, acknowledged that many supporters questioned the decision, especially since he was actively playing for Dutch club NAC Breda. He explained that while some players did not have much game time in the season, he was aware of the public calls for his inclusion.

Ayew stated that although many individuals within Ghana football and the media had wronged him, he chose not to respond due to his commitment to the national team. He emphasized that Ghana was far more important than his personal feelings of hurt. Despite his absence from the 2026 World Cup squad, Ayew maintained his loyalty to Ghana, stating that his commitment to the country superseded any personal disappointment.
