Hungarian Gripen fighter jet crashes near Szolnok as pilot safely ejects, PM Magyar says

On August 24, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha disclosed plans to receive Gripen fighter jets from Sweden, following a discussion with her Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergard. Sybiha highlighted that their primary objective is to safeguard Ukraine against Russian ballistic missile assaults, underscoring that the meeting focused on implementing steps towards this goal.

He reported that Sweden's government and people are donating 16 Gripen fighter jets for Ukraine's air defense system, which will be delivered in early 2027. Additionally, Sweden will provide corresponding equipment, technical assistance, and support. The deal also includes the possibility of purchasing up to 20 Swedish Gripen E/F fighters of the latest modification.

Ukraine will also receive 16 Gripen C/D series fighters at no cost as part of bilateral assistance from Sweden. The acquisition of these aircraft, equipped with long-range Meteor air-to-air missiles, is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine's air defense capabilities, enabling effective neutralization of Russian aviation, cruise missiles, and kamikaze drones.
