How grief led Mohana to a life of rescuing strays

Mohana Sunthari never envisioned herself as an animal rescuer, but a profound loss in her life set her on a journey to help stray cats. Grieving the sudden death of both her parents in 2017, Mohana experienced depression, insomnia, and an overwhelming sense of emptiness. It was during this period that her first rescue came to her - a cat caught in a car accident and left abandoned.

The experience of saving this cat, which she believed was a divine intervention, led her to believe that her newfound purpose was to rescue and care for stray animals.

Initially, Mohana took in one cat, but the pandemic saw her expanding her efforts by regularly feeding stray cats near her Old Klang Road home. Over time, her rescues grew, and she now cares for around 20 cats at home. Despite her efforts, Mohana acknowledges she cannot help every stray and is limited by resources such as money, space, and the help of others.

One of her current residents, Oyen, suffered from severe injuries after being scalded with hot water, possibly by an elderly, ill woman living in the apartment block. Mohana treated Oyen's wounds at home but realized professional care was necessary, leading her to seek funds for the bill, which exceeded RM1,000. A rescuer stepped in and covered the cost, allowing Mohana to continue her work. Another cat with a pelvic fracture is being managed with medication, and surgery may be needed but could cost over RM4,000.
