Gov Otu Assures SPAR Fire Victims of Government Support

Governor Bassey Edet of Cross River State has assured the victims of a fire outbreak at a SPAR shopping complex in Calabar that the state government will provide full support to help them recover from the devastating incident. Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Odey visited the scene on Saturday to assess the damage, console the affected management and traders, and assure them of the government's unwavering support.

Odey stated, "His Excellency, the governor, is deeply concerned about this unfortunate incident. We are here to identify with the management, the traders and everyone who has been affected, and to assure them that they are not alone at this difficult moment." The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, but preliminary indications suggest a possible electrical fault.

The Director-General of the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has begun arrangements to evaluate the damage and identify the immediate needs of those affected. The state government aims not only to sympathize with the victims but to actively assist them in regaining their footing. They plan to provide necessary support within government capacity to ensure businesses can resume operations as soon as reasonably possible.

Odey commended the Cross River State Fire Service for their prompt and professional response, alongside the intervention of the Federal Fire Service. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in maintaining order during the crisis. The governor expressed concern over the series of unfortunate occurrences in Calabar, including recent fire outbreaks and landslides, and emphasized the need for preventive measures and improved emergency response capacities.
