Ghana removes over 3,000 migrant beggars and illegal immigrants since 2025 - Interior Minister reveals

Ghana's Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, has revealed that the country removed a total of 2,281 migrant beggars and 774 illegal immigrants involved in organized crime during the year 2025. Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on August 24, the minister explained that the Ghana Immigration Service had consistently removed individuals found to be engaging in irregular migration and unlawful activities.

By the end of the year, the Immigration Service had successfully removed 2,281 migrant beggars and 774 other illegal immigrants from Ghana. The enforcement efforts continued into 2026, with 960 migrant beggars removed from the streets of Accra and Kumasi, and an additional 186 illegal immigrants removed by July of this year. The minister emphasized that the government was taking these actions while considering Ghana's obligations under the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and its diplomatic relations with other countries.

The government's primary goal is to minimize irregular migration and associated unlawful activities, ensuring that enforcement measures are lawful, respectful of human dignity, and carried out by qualified personnel. The minister assured the public that the Ministry of Interior faced a skill-based challenge rather than a lack of political will, security, intelligence, or leadership.

He promised logistical support to increase the scale of removals and strengthen relevant institutions, promising that the public would soon witness the results of this increased support.
