Everyone has a Sarjit story

Sarjit Singh, a former Malaysian hockey captain and two-time Olympian, passed away at the age of 63 after battling acute myeloid leukaemia. After being diagnosed, he spent over a month in the hospital waiting for a bone marrow transplant. His wife, Kulwant Kaur, informed me that he had passed away peacefully in his sleep at the hospital.

Sarjit left behind a legacy as a successful player, coach, mentor, and friend. His 12-year international career included participation in the 1984 Los Angeles and 1992 Barcelona Olympics, earning him more than 200 caps and seven years as captain of the Malaysian men's team. He also served two stints as coach of the national team.

Beyond his achievements, Sarjit was known for his dedication to developing Malaysian hockey and fostering connections between clubs worldwide. He believed in giving players the knowledge to succeed and in taking them to international tournaments to learn and grow. Tributes to Sarjit highlighted his warm personality, fierce competitiveness, and generosity.

Former teammates, coaches, and friends remembered him fondly as a beloved mentor and a great athlete. The Malaysian hockey community mourns the loss of a man who gave so much to the sport and to those around him.
