Equinor and Aker BP Make New North Sea Gas Discovery

Norwegian oil and gas companies Equinor and Aker BP have recently made a significant gas and condensate discovery in the North Sea, near the Balder field. This discovery was made in a production license located 16 kilometers northwest of the Balder field and 205 kilometers west of Stavanger, a major oil services hub in Norway. Preliminary estimates suggest that the size of the discovery ranges from 0.1 to 2.1 million standard cubic meters of recoverable oil equivalent. The Norwegian regulator, the Norwegian Offshore Directorate, revealed this information on Monday.

The companies are currently reviewing the results of the newly drilled well and other wells previously drilled in the license to assess potential for further exploration in the production license. With Norway, Equinor, Aker BP, and other producers focusing on drilling and development near existing infrastructure, they aim to expedite new projects through tie-backs to operational platforms.

This strategy is crucial for maintaining high levels of oil and gas production and exports in Norway, which is a key player in supplying gas to Europe after the Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupted gas supplies.

Equinor is particularly ambitious, planning to drill between 20 to 30 exploration wells annually as it strives to maintain its current production levels until 2035. In January, Equinor was awarded 35 new production licenses on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, expanding its exploration efforts in mature exploration areas. Currently, Norway produces more than 4 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, with nearly equal distribution between oil and gas, each contributing around 2 million barrels of oil equivalent per day.
