Eid ul Mawlid: IPCR Calls on Nigerians to Reject Hate Speech, Embrace Dialogue

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has called upon Nigerians to refrain from hate speech, inflammatory rhetoric, and violence as the country commemorates Eid ul Mawlid. This annual celebration marks the birth of the Prophet Muhammad and offers an opportunity for reflection on his teachings of compassion, justice, forgiveness, peaceful coexistence, and respect for human dignity.

Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director General of IPCR, emphasized the need for unity and peaceful relations among Nigerians of various faiths during the Eid celebration. Nigeria's diverse religious, ethnic, and political landscape should be seen as a source of strength rather than a cause for division, and differences in identity should not lead to violence.

The IPCR specifically asked religious leaders to promote peace, tolerance, and responsible citizenship, especially considering the social, economic, and security challenges faced by communities nationwide. Political, traditional, and community leaders were urged to model responsible leadership by discouraging divisive statements and inflammatory actions.

The institute stressed that dialogue should be the go-to method for resolving disagreements, warning that peace cannot be achieved through confrontation, violence, or leaving others out. The values associated with Eid should not be confined to the celebration alone but should be practiced daily, with Nigerians extending compassion to the vulnerable, supporting those in need, and engaging in activities that foster social cohesion.

The institute called upon all Nigerians to collectively work towards building a united and inclusive society where every citizen can live with dignity, security, and hope for a brighter future.
