Edo lawmakers reject Blessing Agbebaku’s resignation, impeach him as speaker

The Edo State House of Assembly recently took a decisive step in an ongoing crisis by formally impeaching the former Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku. Agbebaku, who represented the Owan West constituency, had resigned from his post on August 17, 2026, and was subsequently suspended indefinitely. In his stead, Yekini Idaiye, a lawmaker from Akoko-Edo 1, was elected as the new Speaker. However, the situation escalated when the assembly converted Agbebaku's resignation into an impeachment on August 24, 2026.

Idaiye, backed by a majority of lawmakers, presented the impeachment notice during the plenary session of the previous Monday. The motion for formal impeachment was moved by Sunny Ojiezele, the majority leader, and seconded by Ahmed Waziri, the member representing Etsako Central. The speaker of the house stated that Agbebaku remains in suspension and directed him to return all government property. He also warned that security agencies would be involved if the former Speaker failed to comply or respond to the house.
