Dutch Pull Out of 'No Longer Neutral' Eurovision

On Monday, the Dutch state broadcaster Avrotros announced that the Netherlands will not participate in next year's Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). The decision comes as the war in Gaza casts doubt on the contest's neutrality. This marks the biggest political boycott in Eurovision history, joining Spain, Ireland, Iceland, and Slovenia in protesting Israel's participation.

Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated outside the event. Avrotros Director-General Taco Zimmerman stated that international conflicts are increasingly impacting the contest and damaging its neutral character, which now appears to be a platform for division. Eurovision organizers recently introduced new rules barring countries engaged in armed conflicts from hosting the competition, but Avrotros believes these changes do not restore the contest's independent and neutral status.

The ESC, watched by tens of millions worldwide, sees Israel regularly near victory. Next year's event will be held in Bulgaria after last year's winner, Dara, from the Netherlands, took the title. The Netherlands' first participation was in 1956, and they've won five times, most recently in 2019. Avrotros Director-General Taco Zimmerman expressed deep disappointment in the decision but emphasized the broadcaster's commitment to its values, even if it means withdrawing from a cherished event.
