U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to double tariffs on Canadian cars and trucks, imposing a 50 percent rate from January 2027. This move follows the collapse of trade negotiations between the two countries last week. The additional 50 percent tariffs come on top of the already existing 50 percent levies on Canadian steel, which Trump imposed recently.

Trump also announced 50 percent tariffs on auto parts, a sector that has not previously faced such levies. He tweeted, "Build in the U.S. and there are ZERO TARIFFS. Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" Trump expressed frustration with Canada, stating they were among the worst nations to deal with, feeling entitled while the U.S. needs Canada more than Canada needs the U.S. Canada has traditionally been one of the U.S.'s top trading partners, with $872.3 billion in goods and services trade in 2022, a 4.6 percent decrease from the previous year.

Over three-quarters of Canada's goods were exported to the U.S., while almost half of U.S. imports came from Canada. Major auto manufacturers have expressed skepticism about Trump's threat, noting that he has made similar announcements in the past that did not materialize. They also pointed out that a tariff of this size could provoke a significant Canadian retaliation, and that January was still months away, potentially after the November midterm elections.
