Delhi waterlogging fury: AAP councillors sail into MCD House with inflatable boat

Delhi's municipal corporation met with an unusual interruption on Monday when members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) brought an inflatable boat into the House during a general meeting. The boat, filled with air outside the chambers, was carried inside amid raised slogans and standing on benches by the party's councillors. This dramatic act was a stark reminder of the severe waterlogging plaguing various parts of the city following heavy rainfall.

Mayor Pravesh Wahi temporarily adjourned the proceedings for approximately 10 minutes following the disruption. The meeting resumed later amidst exchanges between BJP and Opposition councillors. The meeting ultimately concluded at 6.30 pm.

The Leader of Opposition in the House, Anukush Narang, criticized the BJP for failing to address the "serious" issue of waterlogging. He further alleged that the civic administration had not taken adequate measures to tackle the situation, adding, "The city has never witnessed this kind of waterlogging before."

Mayor Wahi responded by accusing the AAP councillors of frequently resorting to disruptions to avoid constructive discussions on matters of public interest. He also issued a stern warning, stating that maintaining the dignity and decorum of the House was every councillor's responsibility. Wahi emphasized that if such "unparliamentary conduct" were to recur, appropriate action would be taken in accordance with the rules.

In addition to addressing the waterlogging crisis, the meeting saw discussions on various civic issues. Key concerns raised by councillors included waterlogging, drains, the mosquito menace, and stray dogs. Mayor Wahi announced that as part of efforts to enhance healthcare facilities for elected representatives, serving councillors would be provided medical treatment facilities at rates applicable under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS).
