Dan + Shay Reintroduce Themselves by Harnessing ‘Something That AI Can’t Replicate: The Human Spirit’

Dan + Shay have always known when they've created a hit. Throughout their 13-year career, the country music duo of Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney have consistently topped Billboard's Country Airplay chart with hits such as "Tequila" and "10,000 Hours." They have won multiple Grammys and CMA Awards and had their lyrics sung back to them from stages worldwide.

When the duo penned their follow-up to their 2024 album Bigger Houses, they knew they had found something special. However, they also experienced cold feet. Smyers admits they nearly broke up in 2022 before releasing Bigger Houses and taking an unofficial hiatus. The pair primarily focused on personal growth during this time, strengthening their relationships and seeking therapy. As fathers in their mid- to late 30s, they grappled with maturity and new life stages. They aimed to create hits that truly mattered to them.

Their new album, Young, released through Warner Records Nashville/Warner Music Canada, is described as their most autobiographical work to date. It explores themes of love, loss, mental health, and aging alongside classic romantic country elements. The album begins with the most personal and poignant single, "Say So," which deals with the death of Ben Vaughn, the late head of Warner Chappell Music who passed away by suicide in 2025.

Mooney explains that Vaughn believed in them before they were even a band, signing them to their first publishing deal and championing their career. They were writing songs about their friend without intending to create a tribute when "Say So" emerged from their writer's room in Nashville. Smyers recalls his wife's reaction upon hearing the demo, saying it was "a beautiful tribute to Ben" and fitting for his birthday. The duo knew they had to release the song, recognizing it was more than just a coincidence.
