Court should be ultimate sanctuary for citizens in pursuit of justice – Fubara

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has emphasized the importance of the legal system as the foundation of government-citizen relations, urging legal professionals to firmly uphold the rule of law, constitutional democracy, and citizens' fundamental rights. Speaking at the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association conference in Port Harcourt, Fubara described the law as a crucial element in promoting citizens' security, welfare, and socio-economic prosperity.

He stressed that a society that respects the rule of law and democratic principles experiences order, peace, and significant advancement.

Fubara argued that courts should not merely serve as dispute resolution venues, but should instead provide citizens with the ultimate sanctuary for justice. He encouraged judges to consider the far-reaching consequences of their rulings, asserting that justice administered with integrity is essential for maintaining law and order, as well as fostering national development. He cautioned against judges becoming apologetic or conformist, and urged them to remain vigilant protectors of democracy and good governance.

The governor called on lawyers to maintain their integrity and courage, even when faced with political authority exceeding constitutional boundaries. He emphasized that lawyers have a duty to prevent power abuse and uphold democratic principles. Fubara highlighted his administration's commitment to advancing judicial development, noting that they have worked with the State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Amadi, to increase access to justice by hiring more judges and creating additional courts.

The state government also built a Federal High Court facility, which will soon be transferred to the Federal High Court. Fubara pledged to maintain the administrative and financial independence of the judiciary in Rivers State, stressing that a robust and independent judiciary is vital for sustaining democracy and good governance.
