Commanders HC Dan Quinn Made Intriguing Practice Change

Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn implemented a new approach to practices this offseason, aiming to boost his players' preparation for challenging game situations. After a disappointing 5-12 record in the previous season, Quinn sought to instill a fresh sense of urgency within his team. To achieve this, Quinn made significant changes to his coaching staff, hiring David Blough as offensive coordinator and Daronte Jones as defensive coordinator.

In addition to staff changes, Quinn initiated a shift in the intensity of his practices. The sessions became longer, more intense, and featured a higher level of competition. Rather than relying on scripted periods, Quinn introduced game-like scenarios during practices, such as 4th-and-3, 4th-and-7, and 4th-and-1, which required players to make crucial decisions under pressure. This strategy aimed to sharpen his players' decision-making skills and increase their overall readiness for real-game situations.

Quinn also emphasized the importance of a competitive culture within the team. He incorporated one-on-one competitions, pitting players against each other as receivers and defensive backs, effectively turning practice into a game. By doing so, he hoped to infuse the team with the competitive spirit that propelled them to the NFC Championship in 2024. This renewed focus on competition is expected to play a crucial role in Washington's return to the playoffs in the wide-open NFC East this season.
