Coco Gauff soars into U.S. Open with dominant run to title in Cincinnati

Coco Gauff made a strong, near-perfect showing in Cincinnati this past Sunday, reaching her first U.S. Open title in the process. Winning against Jessica Pegula 6-2, 6-4, Gauff marked her return from a less successful period and solidified her position as a top favorite for the upcoming Grand Slam. Her confidence had been on the rise after a dominant performance at the Cincinnati Open and a decent run in Toronto, where she lost in the semifinals.

Last year, Gauff struggled with her serve and forehand, double-faulting frequently and hitting forehands off her back foot. Her situation was so dire ahead of the U.S. Open, she even hired a biomechanist, Gavin MacMillan, who had previously helped Aryna Sabalenka rise to world No. 1. After months of dedicated work, Gauff's performance now reflects the improvements.

She unleashed powerful serves clocking 123 mph, paired with topspin forehands that kept Pegula on her toes. With a few setbacks, Gauff always managed to pull through, sealing the match with a triumphant air.

Pegula, acknowledging the strong performance, quipped, "You were like a backboard today." Gauff retorted, "I don't know, all the balls were going in for me today." Reflecting on her journey, she called MacMillan and her longtime coach, J.C. Faurel, a "dynamic duo." Gauff's transformation mirrors her previous success, having won Cincinnati three years ago and the U.S. Open the very following year. If history repeats itself, another title at the U.S. Open seems inevitable.
