Coco Gauff beats Jessia Pegula for 2nd Cincinnati Open title

Mason witnessed a thrilling All-American women's final at the Cincinnati Open on Sunday, Aug. 23, as 22-year-old Coco Gauff emerged victorious, capturing her second Rookwood Cup title. The match took place at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, marking the first time two American women faced off for the championship since 1970. Rosie Casals had last triumphed over Nancy Richey in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) 56 years ago.

Just three years ago, Gauff became the first teenager to win the Cincinnati Open since 1968, and she continued her impressive performances with her fourth career WTA 1000 title in this match. Gauff dominated the week, winning 12 consecutive sets after dropping the first round of the 64 against Liudmila Samsanova on Aug. 16.

In their 10th singles meeting, Gauff, the World No. 4, attacked early, winning the first five games and securing the first set 6-2. She broke Pegula four times en route to the victory, applying consistent pressure throughout the match. The strategic net attacks resulted in emphatic winners from short range, as Gauff maintained a 73-32 game advantage in total games won. Gauff, who has reached three WTA 1000 finals this season, secured her 12th career WTA title, while Pegula will climb to No. 4 in the Race to the WTA Finals.
