Clearing of Accra-Kumasi expressway nears completion

The clearing of the right-of-way for the proposed 200-kilometre Accra-Kumasi expressway is almost finished, with merely 20 kilometres remaining, according to Kwame Governance Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Highways. He expressed that once that is accomplished, construction works could begin promptly to complete the aim of linking Ghana's two largest cities more conveniently.

On a recent visit to the Ashanti region, Mr. Agbodza stated that the expressway's significance to the socio-economic connection between Accra and Kumasi cannot be overstated. He emphasized the government's steadfast commitment to the project and also recognized the professionalism of the Ghana Armed Forces in clearing the right-of-way according to the 20-week timeline.

The minister also praised the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his encouragement and guidance on road infrastructure projects within Kumasi. The Asantehene had previously stressed the importance of completing roads around the Sewua area to ensure the proper functioning of the Sewua Hospital, which is intended to serve as a regional hospital for the area.

Since then, the contractor, Kofi Job, has returned to the site and is making good progress, having completed one leg of the work and moving on to the other side. The Accra-Kumasi expressway is a crucial road project that would enhance connectivity between Ghana's two major cities, decrease travel durations, and stimulate economic activity along the corridor.

The clearing of the right-of-way began in May, and its completion would set the stage for the commencement of actual construction works for the 120-metres wide expressway. The road is planned to run through Ablekuma, Adeiso, Asamankese, Akim Oda, Ofoase Ayirebi, and Sewua into the Kumasi township.
