Claude Was Down For Thousands, Including Users In India: Here's Why

Anthropic's Claude AI platform experienced a global outage on August 24, leaving users in India and other regions unable to access the chatbot, its coding tool, and mobile app for an extended period of over three hours. According to Anthropic's official status page, the issue began at 5:06 am UTC (10:36 am IST) and was resolved by 8:30 am UTC (2:00 pm IST).

The company identified the cause of the errors within 20 minutes of detecting elevated errors related to Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5, and Claude Opus 4.8. However, they continued to work through the morning to stabilize all affected models. The disruption encompassed claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork, while the Claude Console and Claude for Government remained unaffected.

Downdetector recorded more than 1,300 user reports in the US alone, and India logged over 180 reports, with 55 percent of users specifically facing issues with Claude Code, 21 percent encountering problems with the chat interface, and the remaining 14 percent unable to use the Claude app. Users took to social media, with many referencing an "overloaded" server error that has become more frequent in recent weeks.

Anthropic had not issued a public statement early in the incident, directing users to its status page for updates. They formally acknowledged the outage after identifying the cause. This was the latest in a series of service disruptions for Anthropic in August, with previous outages attributed to demand exceeding available compute capacity due to increasing enterprise use of Claude Code and a surge in consumer sign-ups.
