Chinese robot beats Usain Bolt's running record

Robots are competing in China, showcasing new skills that may beat records set by humans. CBS News' Anna Coren reports from Beijing.

At the World Humanoid Robot Games held in Beijing, China, a robot built by Chinese company X-Humanoid shattered the 100-meter sprint world record, which had previously been held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt. X-Humanoid completed the 100-meter race in an astonishing 9.39 seconds, surpassing Bolt's record of 9.58 seconds set in 2009.

The robot's triumph was the result of a thrilling competition where more than 2,000 humanoid robots representing 16 countries participated in a variety of athletic challenges, including weightlifting, table tennis, and soccer. Among its other feats, the X-Humanoid robot also set a new record for the standing high jump, leaping to a height of 2.88 meters, which surpassed the previous record of 2.45 meters set by Cuban athlete Javier Sotomayor in 1993.

Despite its record-breaking performance, the robot's celebration was short-lived as it crashed into a cushion at the track's turn, resulting in its subsequent disintegration.

  • "Verified" can mean cryptographic signature proven true through math
  • "Verified" can also mean inferred or estimated judgement by heuristics
  • Using separate fields for each type of "verified" reduces errors
