Can Muli pull a Sifuna-Nyoro in Ukambani? The political gamble ahead of 2027

NAIROBI, Kenya — Augustus Kyalo Muli, a National Liberal Party (NLP) politician, is challenging the political dominance of Ukambani by positioning himself as an independent candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election. Muli insists he is not a proxy for President William Ruto nor an appendage of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musaoka, emphasizing his commitment to regional interests and future national alliances.

The comparison to former ODM leader Edwin Sifuna and former UDA leader Ndindi Nyoro's political journeys is drawn as Muli seeks to leverage generational messaging, regional identity, and a new political vehicle to gain national bargaining power.

Ukambani, with its roughly two million voters, has traditionally been used as a bargaining chip in national elections, often without sufficient political returns. Muli, through NLP, aims to unite the region and negotiate nationally on their terms, a strategy akin to Sifuna's and Nyoro's attempts to break away from established parties. While Sifuna and Nyoro have established themselves through national politics and party leadership, Muli faces the challenge of building a new political base from the ground up.
