Browns Polarizing Rookie Waived in Historic Roster Move

The Cleveland Browns have waived rookie tight end Dae’Quan Wright, clearing the path for him to rejoin college football at LSU. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Wright has an agreement to play for LSU this season if he passes NFL waivers. Wright joined the Browns on August 11 after being claimed off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles.

He entered the NCAA transfer portal while still under contract with the Browns and suited up for Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, but did not participate. If another NFL team claims Wright, it could disrupt his planned return to college. However, this outcome is not anticipated. If Wright clears waivers, he will join former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin at LSU.

Cleveland head coach Todd Monken appeared surprised by Wright’s situation, stating that Wright had a medical issue preventing him from practicing. Monken also revealed that Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin had reached out to him before Wright entered the portal. With Wright now waived, the Browns will have a streamlined roster as they finalize their 53-man squad.

The team will have one final opportunity to assess players on Thursday against the New England Patriots. Starting roster positions, including those for sixth-round rookie Taylen Green and quarterback Dillon Gabriel, will be determined. Monken expects to announce his starting quarterback by Monday after reviewing the performances of Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders.
