Brennan sprints to Vuelta stage two victory, Pogacar keeps red

MANISQUE, France: Matthew Brennan secured a hard-fought victory in a bunch sprint during stage two of the Vuelta a Espana, while race favorite Tadej Pogacar retained the coveted red jersey. Spaniard Pau Miquel crossed the line in third place. The grueling 214.3-kilometer stage, which traversed over 3,000 meters of climbing, began in Monaco and made its way to Manosque in France.

Ethan Hayter, who was initially pipped by Pogacar in Saturday's opening time trial, was part of a four-man breakaway who held the lead for most of the race; however, the peloton never allowed them to escape too far ahead. Brennan seized the opportunity to claim the intermediate sprint and earn six bonus seconds, which brought him within striking distance of Pogacar's red jersey.

Despite a valiant effort by Wout van Aert under two kilometers before the finish, the peloton managed to catch them, ultimately securing Brennan's stage win. Brennan, competing in his first Grand Tour, expressed his excitement about the win, stating that it was a nice achievement and possibly the first of many. Pogacar, a five-time Tour de France champion and the overwhelming favorite to win the Vuelta, is set to embark on stage three, a 174-kilometer race from Gruissan to Font Romeu, with the first high-altitude finale awaiting the riders on Monday.
