Border crackdown: R1.3m Range Rover, R2.3m illicit cigarettes seized in Limpopo

The United States Customs and Border Protection announced on August 21 that they seized 2,250 cartons of counterfeit Camel cigarettes at Washington Dulles International Airport on August 14. The shipment originated from Singapore via Japan. If the cigarettes were authentic, their value would have exceeded half a million dollars.

The destination of the shipment was an address in Miami, and it contained 45 boxes labeled "Camel Yellow Cigarettes." Each box held 50 cartons of Camel brand cigarettes. However, the authorities became suspicious when they noticed the cartons had a different logo and markings, and the shipment's routing was unusual since Camel cigarettes are manufactured in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Officers then consulted trade experts at the agency's Agriculture and Prepared Products Center of Excellence, who reached out to R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, the owner and manufacturer of the Camel brand in the US. The company confirmed the cigarettes were fake. According to the agency's appraisal, if the cigarettes had been authentic, they would have been worth approximately $404,842 (or S$514,253).

Area Port Director Christine Waugh of the CBP Area Port of Washington, DC, stated that counterfeit cigarettes deprive the US of tax revenue and pose a serious health risk to smokers who are unaware of the dangerous chemicals they may be inhaling. In 2025, US authorities seized nearly 15 million counterfeit goods, which, if genuine, would have been worth over $7.4 billion (or S$9.4 billion) daily, averaging more than $20 million (or S$25.41 million) per day.
