BJP spokesperson urges Modi to make sewage and effluent treatment mandatory before discharge into rivers

BJP spokesperson M.A. Mohan has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the implementation of mandatory sewage and industrial effluent treatment before discharge into Indian rivers. In his letter, Mr. Mohan highlighted the severe pollution of rivers across the country due to untreated wastewater from towns, resorts, and commercial establishments.

He cited the Kabini river as a prime example, noting the alarming condition of the riverbed during the recent drought, with visible exposure and stagnant polluted stretches. The letter also pointed out that the same river serves as a drinking water source for Mysuru and downstream flows into T. Narasipur, where it joins the Kaveri, affecting millions of people and ecosystems.

Mr. Mohan requested the Union government to make it mandatory for all urban local bodies, industries, resorts, and commercial establishments situated near rivers to treat wastewater using Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) or Effluent Treatment Plants before discharge. He suggested launching a pilot project on the Kabini river to showcase a comprehensive river pollution prevention model, including the installation and effective operation of STPs.

Protecting rivers is crucial for safeguarding drinking water, agriculture, wildlife, forests, and the health of future generations, Mohan concluded.
