Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the need for a more open and unrestricted environment for the film industry during a recent press conference in Damansara Damai. He expressed his desire to provide greater freedom to film enthusiasts and filmmakers to ensure the industry remains relevant. However, Anwar stressed that this freedom must be balanced with values, culture, and morality, and not be influenced by foreign standards.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the importance of not straying too far from traditional values, culture, and morality while remaining open-minded. He also urged the Cabinet to adopt a more open and tolerant attitude, without compromising their cultural and moral foundations. Anwar cautioned that if the industry becomes overly rigid and closed, it may hinder the growth of the film and entertainment sector.

During his speech at the Menara National Film Development Corporation (Finas) press conference, Anwar highlighted the need for Finas to be more daring in attracting the younger generation to Malay-language films. This includes promoting classic films that may have become less popular among the younger demographic. He stressed that these efforts are crucial because film is not just entertainment, but also a significant part of the nation's cultural heritage and identity.

Anwar personally noted a gap after attempting to introduce classic Malay films, such as those by P Ramlee, to his children, who showed positive reactions. He concluded that this shows the younger generation is not against Malay-language films; they simply need better exposure to historical and culturally significant works.
