Global food supplies face a threat from heatwaves, conflict and falling harvests, according to New York Times quoting University of Guelph professor Evan Fraser, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti. The newspaper says conflict has cut food supplies including wheat, while climate change is worsening conditions as waterways for shipping are getting lower.

In addition, heatwaves and drought are also reducing crop yields in major grain-producing countries. "The system we use now depends on three things: smooth trade, cheap energy and stable climate. Today, it seems none of those premises can be met," said Fraser. The newspaper says the United States (US) is expected to record the worst wheat harvest since 1970 due to drought.

Australia, which is also one of the major wheat suppliers, has reduced the area of wheat cultivation due to high prices, while France and Germany expect a fall in grain harvests due to unusually strong heat. However, good grain stocks from last year's harvest help to reduce pressure on global prices, according to the report. Fraser said the food system that has been used for so long is no longer suitable for the present situation and needs to be re-evaluated.
