Bawku motorbike restrictions eased as government allows daytime riding

The government has relaxed restrictions on motorbike riding in the Bawku Municipality and surrounding regions of the Upper East Region. Starting from Tuesday, August 25, 2026, both men and women will be allowed to ride motorbikes between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. daily. The Interior Ministry announced this change on Monday, August 24, 2026, following a review by the Minister for the Interior, who sought advice from the National Security Council.

The new rules will take effect from the following day. However, the existing curfew in Bawku and its environs remains unchanged, prohibiting movement from 10:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. The government also reiterated a total ban on possessing, carrying, or using arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within the affected areas. Anyone found in violation of this ban will face arrest and prosecution as per the law.

This decision is part of the government's efforts to strike a balance between security concerns in Bawku and the need to provide residents with greater freedom of movement and access to transportation during the day.
