At 210, Penang Free School looks to the future

Penang Free School marks its 210th anniversary this year, a milestone that sees the school bridging its rich educational history with aspirations for a digitally driven future. Established in 1816, PFS has witnessed generations of students transition through its walls, adapting to changes in career paths and the evolving landscape of education.

The school’s motto, "Fortis Atque Fidelis" – strong and faithful – has remained steadfast for all these years. As the school prepares to celebrate its bicentenary in October, the focus extends beyond honoring the past to envisioning the future.

The three-day celebration, spanning October 1 to 3, will be the first major gathering since the school’s bicentenary celebration a decade ago. Organising committee chairman Ivan Ooi emphasized that the event aims not just to celebrate an anniversary but to rally alumni, known as 'Old Frees', to support the school, its educators, and fellow alumni at a critical juncture. Ooi stressed that the milestone serves as a call to action, encouraging the broader PFS community to contribute to the school’s next phase of growth.

Central to the anniversary is the establishment of the Penang Free School Digital Transformation Fund, aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure, supporting teacher development, and expanding opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), artificial intelligence, robotics, and coding. Ooi highlighted the evolving educational landscape, noting that today’s students face a world vastly different from the one they inherited 30 years ago.

While conventional academic subjects and professions like medicine, law, engineering, teaching, and business remained popular, the rise of digital technology, including AI, data science, and robotics, has opened new fields with untapped potential for current and future PFS students.

The Digital Transformation Fund seeks to bridge this gap by preparing students not only academically but also equipping them to thrive in a technology-driven world. Unlike the past, where academic performance and traditional career paths dominated, today’s students must be adept at navigating a landscape where technology continually reshapes industries, jobs, and leadership roles.

Ooi stressed that the fund's resources will not replace the school’s existing public funding but will augment it, enabling faster progress in areas where technology and industry are rapidly advancing.

"We want to bring together alumni, industry partners, the community, and government support to create opportunities that extend beyond the school’s current capabilities," Ooi explained. For the 'Old Frees', the anniversary provides a chance to revisit cherished memories within the school’s historic grounds, while the school itself seeks to remain relevant in an era defined by rapid technological change.

The anniversary program will include the 210th speech day, the Free School Reunites event, a guided tour of the school, and a grand 210th anniversary dinner, offering alumni and current students alike a chance to reflect on the past while embracing the future.
