Astros Part Ways With GM Dana Brown, Jim Crane Takes Over Baseball Ops

The Houston Astros have decided to part ways with General Manager Dana Brown, while owner Jim Crane has stepped in as the interim baseball operations leader. This comes amidst a disappointing playoff run in the AL West division. Crane announced that he will oversee baseball operations throughout the transition period. Brown's responsibilities will be divided among assistant GMs Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff, as well as senior advisor and Baseball Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell.

Jim Crane, who has been an active owner since acquiring the Astros in 2011, has taken a more hands-on approach in this situation. He has previously done this during a nearly three-month transition period following the firing of James Click in late 2022 and Brown's arrival in early 2023. During this period, the Astros made costly free-agent signings of José Abreu and Rafael Montero without much success.

Brown's contract was set to expire at the end of 2026, and it was unlikely that he would be retained by the Astros. He had led the team to playoff berths in 2023 and 2024, and was potentially in line for another one this season. However, the current campaign has been fraught with difficulties after Houston's absence from the postseason last year.

The Astros have a wealth of talent, including multiple-time AL Most Valuable Player contender Yordan Álvarez, veteran stars José Altuve and Jeremy Peña, and a top-10 MLB luxury-tax payroll. Despite this, they are currently sitting just one game under .500 entering Monday's game, tied with the Rangers for the division lead.

Crane has a history of dealing with GMs, having fired James Click shortly after winning the 2022 World Series due to contract negotiation issues and differing viewpoints. The Astros' current situation also echoes that of the Dallas Cowboys, with their owner Jerry Jones also serving as their head coach.
