Anwar wants greater freedom in the arts, particularly filmmaking

Sungai Buloh: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called for the Cabinet to embrace a more open and accommodating stance towards the arts, specifically filmmaking, while maintaining respect for cultural values and morals. The leader of Malaysia asserts that the arts must evolve to remain relevant, but such progress should not come at the expense of cultural preservation.

Anwar emphasizes that the nation must strike a balance between embracing a freer environment for artists and retaining its unique heritage. While he does not advocate for radical Westernization, Anwar notes that Eastern nations should not blindly adopt neoconservative trends. The Prime Minister urges the Cabinet to adopt a flexible approach, ensuring that the arts, particularly the film industry, remain dynamic and relevant.

Finas, the National Film Development Corporation, is tasked with introducing younger generations to Malay films, including classics that may have become unfamiliar to them. Anwar highlights the importance of this endeavor, as films are an integral part of a country's cultural identity. The Prime Minister's interest in Malay cinema stems from his own experience introducing his grandchildren to classic films, particularly those of legendary filmmaker P Ramlee.

His grandchildren's positive response to these timeless works has led Anwar to believe that younger generations are not rejecting Malay films, but simply need more exposure to culturally rich and historically significant films.
