Alfalfa sprouts linked to E. coli and salmonella outbreak

An E. coli and salmonella outbreak linked to alfalfa sprouts has affected 55 people across 15 states, according to federal health officials. The contaminated sprouts, sold under the brands Everything Sprouts and Calco, were grown by Everything Sprouts LLC in Minneapolis and distributed in Minnesota and Wisconsin from May 27 to August 21.

Two infected individuals were co-infected with both E. coli and Salmonella, while four people required hospitalization. No deaths have been reported as of August 21, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli typically appear three to four days after consuming the bacteria and include severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and bloody diarrhea. Most people recover within five to seven days without treatment, though a small number may develop a serious kidney complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which requires hospital care. Young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk of severe illness.

Salmonella symptoms usually manifest six hours to six days after exposure and include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Most people recover in four to seven days. Children under five, adults 65 and older, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to experience severe symptoms and require medical attention. Anyone with the recalled sprouts should discard them or return them to the store, while surfaces, containers, and utensils that the sprouts may have touched should be thoroughly cleaned with hot, soapy water or through the dishwasher.

Retailers and restaurants should cease selling or serving the sprouts and sanitize any items that came into contact with the product.
