Afenyo-Markin sues GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi over alleged defamatory remarks

Parliament's Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has filed a lawsuit against the CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, over remarks he believes to be false and defamatory. The legal action was announced on Monday, August 24, 2026, as Parliament reconvened after weeks of exchanges between the two regarding GoldBod's operations and financial losses according to the Bank of Ghana's Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The dispute escalated after Mr Gyamfi allegedly referred to Mr Afenyo-Markin as an "extortionist" in response to the Minority Leader's criticism of the programme and his requests for clarification over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025. In Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin announced he had instructed his lawyers to initiate legal proceedings against Mr Gyamfi and news outlets that published the contentious statements.

Two suits have been filed at the courts: one at the Accra High Court (GT/1029/2026) and the other at the Achimota Circuit Court (GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026). Mr Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence in the courts' ability to evaluate the evidence and relevant laws, leading to a suitable resolution. The legal battle stems from an ongoing public disagreement over the financial performance of the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and the reasons behind the reported losses.

Mr Afenyo-Markin has repeatedly urged the government and GoldBod to provide comprehensive explanations about the reported US$1.7 billion loss. In contrast, Mr Gyamfi has denied any responsibility for the loss and has defended his comments directed at Mr Afenyo-Markin. Gyamfi has pledged readiness to defend his stance and the allegations in court.
