21mil tourist arrivals in first half of 2026, but pace slackens

In the first half of 2026, Malaysia welcomed over 21 million international tourists, marking a 2.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025, according to Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Tiong King Sing. Despite this growth, the minister highlighted that the pace of arrivals has slowed down, with the lowest growth rate since the post-pandemic recovery began.

This decline is primarily attributed to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which led to the cancellation of 4,111 scheduled flights to Malaysia. The Tourism Malaysia and immigration department data revealed that 21,118,039 tourists visited the country between January and June 2026, a rise of 514,958 or 2.5% from the previous year's 20,603,081 arrivals.

However, the growth rate from 26 of the 50 key source markets was down, primarily due to the impact of the Middle East conflict on international flight operations and the resulting increase in travel costs. Europe and the Middle East were among the most affected regions, with arrivals from Britain and Germany declining, while France experienced a growth in tourist numbers.

Germany recorded its first negative growth since the tourism market's post-pandemic recovery, while Turkey, Russia, Spain, and Poland saw an increase in arrivals. The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Saudi Arabia, Oman, and Egypt also experienced varying degrees of impact from the conflict. Nevertheless, sustained growth from Singapore, the Philippines, China, Central Asia, Oceania, and North America helped Malaysia maintain an overall increase of 2.5% in tourist arrivals.

Malaysia received 88,058 international flights during the first half of 2026, compared to the originally scheduled 91,486 flights. Though 4,111 flights were canceled due to geopolitical tensions, the addition of 683 new flights resulted in a final total of just 3,428 flights, or 3.7% below the original schedule.
