2 UN Peacekeepers Killed, 7 Injured In South Sudan Ambush

On Monday, two United Nations peacekeepers lost their lives in an ambush while traveling to the isolated Pajut area in South Sudan's Jonglei State. The attack was carried out by unknown armed individuals, as confirmed by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Seven other individuals, comprising three UN peacekeepers, two South Sudan National Police Service members, and two UNMISS civilian staff members, sustained injuries during the violent incident.

In response to the tragedy, UNMISS swiftly deployed a Quick Reaction Force to secure the area and enhance emergency medical and operational support. The mission's leader, Anita Kiki Gbeho, strongly condemned the incident, stating that such violence against UNMISS personnel, who are dedicated to supporting peace in South Sudan, is completely unacceptable.

Gbeho emphasized that attacks on United Nations peacekeepers could potentially constitute war crimes under international law, including international humanitarian law. She urged relevant authorities to conduct a thorough and prompt investigation to ensure those responsible are held accountable, expressing her deepest condolences to the families of the peacekeepers who lost their lives and to those injured for a swift recovery.

Despite the recent attack, South Sudan continues to grapple with a broader conflict and security crisis. Government forces have been engaged in ongoing clashes with fighters and militias loyal to opposition leader Riek Machar, who was suspended from his position as vice president due to treason charges that he claims are politically motivated.

Although a peace agreement was signed in 2018 between President Salva Kiir and Machar, it has effectively collapsed, heightening international concerns over the potential resurgence of a full-scale civil war. Diplomatic and security experts urge immediate restraint and renewed political dialogue, insisting that strict adherence to international humanitarian law and the unconditional protection of humanitarian and peacekeeping personnel are crucial for achieving lasting stability in the region.
