Zelensky warns wartime elections could divide and destroy Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has cautioned that elections during the conflict with Russia could inflict grave damage on the nation by fracturing its populace. According to Reuters, this constitutes Zelensky's inaugural public stance on the matter since Mykhailo Fedorov, the former Minister of Digital Transformation who was recently reinstated, advocated for wartime elections in an unexpected address last week.

Fedorov's sudden dismissal earlier this month triggered mass demonstrations. Nevertheless, his advocates, who had initially demanded his reinstatement, subsequently voiced doubts about his proposition for elections—the initial such suggestion from a prominent Ukrainian political figure since the Russian invasion commenced in 2022.

Reuters notes that Ukrainian law precludes elections during wartime. Experts point out that logistical challenges, including security apprehensions and the presence of millions of Ukrainians residing abroad, under Russian control, or on the frontlines, render the organization of elections arduous. Concurrently, President Zelensky's approval rating has remained comparatively steady around 60 percent.

Polling analysts suggest that while citizens harbor interest in witnessing fresh political faces, many are not particularly enthusiastic about conducting elections in the present circumstances.
