Why IndyCar president Doug Boles believes Freedom 250 will be a ‘one-off’

On Sunday, the Freedom 250 IndyCar race made history in Washington, D.C. However, IndyCar president Doug Boles doesn't anticipate the series returning to Washington next year. Boles emphasized the importance of ensuring the one-time event effectively celebrated the 250th anniversary of the country and showcased the IndyCar brand.

Denker, race chairman and Penske president, shared that the event was intended "once." The Trump administration has reportedly shown interest in IndyCar returning to Washington at least for a second year. Additionally, Washington mayor Muriel Bowser expressed her enthusiasm for the race and hopes it would be followed by subsequent events.

The Freedom 250 cost Penske founder Roger Penske $35 million and attracted over 250,000 attendees, making it a privately attended event. Despite the significant cost, the event's success is defined by its unique experience, rather than its ratings. Boles expressed that the primary goal of the race was to provide fans with memories of celebrating American history at an IndyCar race.

Denker believed that even if the series doesn't return to Washington, the experience of attending the "one-off" event could introduce new fans to the sport.
