What Is a Harness?

A harness is a piece of equipment featuring straps and belts, designed to control or secure a person, animal, or object. In the context of climbing, a harness supports climbers and keeps them safe by connecting them to ropes and carabiners, preventing falls and regulating their movement. These harnesses are also utilized by acrobats and arborists, and users can modify them according to their needs.

In the realm of artificial intelligence, an agent harness is a software component that creates an environment for AI models to operate within. It serves as the foundation for AI agents and enables users to interact directly with these agents. Agent harnesses function similarly to climbing harnesses, providing structure and functionality to AI models.

An agent harness comprises four key elements: a set of instructions, tools, a framework, and a translation layer. The system prompt, akin to a set of instructions for a new employee, governs the AI model's responses. Tools, written in code, provide the model with various capabilities, such as web search, code writing, and email composition.

The framework, also known as the agentic loop, governs the model's behavior and decision-making process. Lastly, a translation layer enables the harness to work with different AI models by bridging the gap between the model's embedded rules and the harness's functionality.
