Trump says Canada wants 'benefits of being a state' as trade war deepens

The United States and Canada plunged into a trade war on Saturday following the breakdown of negotiations in Washington. Both nations accused each other of causing the collapse and imposed new tariffs, with the U.S. imposing 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods and Canada setting September 8 as the start of retaliatory penalties.

President Trump's import taxes will affect around 5% of Canada's shipments to the U.S. annually, encompassing items such as hockey sticks and tongue depressors. Prime Minister Trudeau announced targeted tariff protection for industries impacted by the U.S. duties, including steel products, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics.

No further talks were planned. Both countries noted a loss of trust as one of the first casualties, with Trudeau accusing Washington of using economic integration as a weapon and Trump's trade negotiator stating that the U.S. acted in response to retaliation by its longtime partner. In rejecting a deal that would have reduced tariff relief for Canadian-made vehicles and restricted Canada's ability to form trade agreements with other nations, Trudeau described the U.S. demand as too much and offering too little.

The breakdown in negotiations signals a sharp reversal from previous discussions, which seemed to be heading towards a compromise. The political fallout is likely to be more significant than the economic consequences, as Canada and the U.S. have a combined goods and services trade value of $880 billion annually.
