The iPhone 18 Pro has me ready to break my 15-year Android streak — but it needs to do these 5 things first

For 15 years, I've used Android devices as my primary smartphones, with iPhones being the exception. Recently, the arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro has reignited my desire to return to the iOS ecosystem. However, there are several factors that I believe Apple must address in order for me to consider making the switch from Android. The first of these is the need for consistent back button navigation on iOS devices.

While the left swipe gesture works in certain situations, it is often unpredictable and limited in its application across the platform. This can make navigation cumbersome, particularly on larger phones like the 6.9-inch Pro Max models. Another crucial element that lacks on iOS is robust file management capabilities. The Files app has been available for nearly a decade, yet it offers minimal functionality compared to Android's extensive system file access.

This limitation can be frustrating when apps require specific file storage locations and syncing behaviors. Desktop mode is another desirable feature that Android devices have adopted, enabling users to utilize their phones on larger screens for increased productivity. While desktop mode isn't something I frequently use, it's a valuable tool in certain situations.

Additionally, the ability to customize iOS with third-party launchers would greatly enhance personalization options for users. Currently, such customization is limited, which is a missed opportunity for Apple to offer more flexibility. Lastly, the absence of sideloading, or the ability to install apps outside of the official App Store, is a significant drawback.

While Android's open nature allows for greater freedom in app choice, Apple's strict control over the iOS platform limits user options. Although sideloading poses potential security risks, many PCs have long been capable of installing software from unapproved sources, and the benefits of expanded app availability should not be disregarded.
