Shelley Fabares, Star Of Coach And The Donna Reed Show, Dead At 82

Shelley Fabares, the American actress and singer who gained fame as the teenage character Mary on "The Donna Reed Show," passed away at the age of 82 in Los Angeles, according to reports. Her family confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter in a statement, describing her as a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort. Throughout her life, Fabares was a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, and loyal friend who had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for.

Her acting career spanned six decades, beginning with a 1955 episode of "The Loretta Young Show" when she was just 10 years old. Fabares rose to generational fame with her role as Mary Stone in "The Donna Reed Show," appearing in over 190 episodes of the popular ABC sitcom as the teenage daughter of Donna Reed and Carl Betz. This role led to several film credits, notably three instances in the 1960s where she played a love interest to Elvis Presley in "Girl Happy," "Spinout," and "Clambake."

Fabares' popularity as a teen idol also resulted in a successful recording career, including her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Johnny Angel" in 1962 and three studio albums in the early 1960s.

Beyond her television and film work, Fabares continued to be a mainstay in the industry as she grew older, appearing in NBC's physician sitcom "The Practice" in the 1970s and finding her most enduring role in ABC's "Coach" in 1989. She married recording producer Lou Adler in 1964, and they divorced in 1980. She later married "M*A*S*H" star Mike Farrell in 1984 and was survived by Farrell and her stepchildren, Erin and Michael.
