Russian Drone Strikes Passenger Train in Odesa Region

On Sunday, Aug. 23, a Russian drone struck a passenger train in the Odesa region, but emergency measures averted any injuries. Ukrzaliznytsia Chairman Oleksandr Pertsovskyi stated that the train's monitoring team had preemptively ordered an evacuation, and the locomotive was swiftly halted, ensuring the safety of all 593 passengers, including 15 children. The railway company is currently arranging alternative transport to bring the passengers to their destination, Odesa.

Later that day, the Odesa Regional State Administration's head, Oleg Kipper, reported that Russian forces had targeted the same train route for the second time, reaffirming the absence of casualties. This incident is part of a surge of violent Russian strikes across multiple Ukrainian regions over the weekend. Earlier on Aug. 23, a Russian attack on the village of Sofiivka in the Donetsk region claimed the lives of two people and left another injured.

The State Emergency Service (SES) reported that Russian shelling had destroyed 141 private residences in the area, with emergency responders recovering one body from the ruins. Firefighters managed to extinguish fires at a few buildings and a vehicle, but had to cease their efforts due to the imminent threat of additional Russian artillery fire.

On Aug. 22, a Russian jet-powered "Shahed" drone attacked a residential area in the Osnovyanskyi district of Kharkiv, injuring eight individuals and starting fires in private homes and an outbuilding. Meanwhile, on the previous day, a Russian ballistic missile strike in the Boryspil district of Kyiv killed two people and injured five others, causing damage to a warehouse, a parking lot, multiple vehicles, a private home, and a gas station.

Additionally, seven Russian strikes in the Zaporizhzhia district on Saturday resulted in three deaths, 15 injuries, including a child, and substantial damage to numerous private houses in the region.
