In central Nigeria's Niger State, dozens of civilians were killed when unidentified armed men attacked a major mosque during weekend prayers, according to police on Saturday as reported by Xinhua. A police spokesperson in Niger, Wasiu Abiodun, informed Xinhua via telephone that numerous victims were lost as a result of the attack in Dekara, a community within the Borgu Local Government Area on Friday.

The armed men reportedly surrounded the mosque before leading worshippers through a narrow path, said Abiodun. He added that rescue personnel had launched a rescue operation, but their efforts were hindered by a collapsed bridge connecting the main town with the affected community, as well as difficult terrain and challenging road conditions in the area. Nigeria has witnessed several violent attacks recently, including abductions and killings.
