Despite being checked by a trainer and manager Craig Stammen, Mize continued to play, retiring two batters before being replaced by Kyle Hart.

Throughout the third inning, Mize allowed three solo home runs, with Ryan Jeffers hitting a double and Brooks Lee and Kaelen Culpepper delivering consecutive homers. Mize, acquired from Detroit on August 3, had allowed three home runs in the first two innings before his exit.
