One Nation mocked for latest migration confusion

One Nation is attempting to recover from a recent blunder by their MP David Farley, who incorrectly stated the party's immigration policy details on Insiders. Barnaby Joyce, during an appearance on Sunrise, clarified that the 130,000 figure mentioned by One Nation is in relation to net migration and has been the case all along. Net migration refers to the difference between the number of people entering and leaving the country, excluding short-term visits.

Joyce was asked to explain what he meant by net migration, which he defined as the positive difference between arrivals and departures of both foreigners and Australians.

Regarding Farley's mistake, Joyce acknowledged that it is not unusual for new politicians to make errors. He noted that even experienced politicians can sometimes make mistakes. In contrast, Tanya Plibersek, also on Sunrise, was less forgiving, stating that if there are three One Nation MPs in the room, there will be three different immigration policies.

The incident came after One Nation leader Pauline Hanson intervened on Sunrise, clarifying that the party's net migration target would be 130,000, which is less than half of the government's current migration levels. Party director James Ashby later appeared on TV with a mop in hand, stating that mistakes can be made, but it is important to own up to them.

As for the national cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday, discussions will focus on datacenters, with Queensland and the Northern Territory still undecided on signing up to renewable energy sources to power new datacenters.
